Adventure Time Begins

Last week we were in London checking out all the things we couldn’t pack into our fly-by visit six months ago. Interestingly, this time, for the first time, I didn’t feel like a foreigner in London. I attribute this to having spent such a length of time in the UK; going from Edinburgh to London felt akin to a trip from Adelaide to Melbourne, where things are the same but different and just a bit weird. Instead of wandering around London with wonder, I actually found myself critiquing the city and comparing it with its Scottish counterpart.

In the crypt of All Hallows-by-the-Tower I found a drawing of old London town long before high-rise buildings were part of the scene. London’s skyline looked like a network of 5 story terrace buildings with church spires protruding all over the city, with St Paul’s Cathedral standing dominant. London a century ago reminded me of Edinburgh today, and I have to admit I lost my heart to Edinburgh a while ago.

Today’s London was a massive hit with our appetite for culture, history and sights. We shopped markets – Camden, Brick Lane and Southbank Centre, we climbed monuments – London Bridge and the Monument, we saw musical theatre – The Book of Mormon and Matilda the Musical, we visited galleries and museums – Courtauld Institute of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern, Serpentine Galleries, British Library, Royal Botanic Gardens, Design Museum, V&A Museum, Science Museum, Royal Observatory Greenwich, Benjamin Franklin House, HMS Belfast, Churchill War Rooms Museum Cutty Sark and the London Transport Museum, we took a cruise on the Thames and toured Westminster Palace, we even paid to look through a cemetery, plus we went bowling, twice!

This trip to London marks the beginning of a 4-month bout of travel. As of 29 October we have no fixed address. A Spaceship (camper van) is our new home for the next three weeks whilst we drive Scotland, England, Wales and Irelands! Then we’re onto the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Czech Republic and back to Edinburgh for Christmas and New Year before heading to Italy in 2016 followed by a few unconfirmed countries. It’s going to be an adventurous 4-months!

Taking a gamble

A day in Glasgow usually ends with a few hours to kill before a pre-booked bus ride back to Edinburgh. Every time, and I’m yet to learn this, we’re always ready to catch the bus well before it’s due. A busy day exploring a city on foot is apparently tiring and we usually crash after dinner, but I still keep booking late buses in hope we’ll be fresh and ready for adventure at 8pm. Far from reality.

This trip to Glasgow was for Doors Open Day. A day where doors of government, council, business and religious buildings are thrust open and the public invited inside to paw over wondrous interiors. After 19 properties and 25kms we were pooped. A treat of Micky D’s fries and soda didn’t even restore us. So as one does to waste an hour we went to the casino.

Ready to waste that time and a couple of pounds we wandered into the casino foyer. Casually ignoring the pompous front of house staff we turned to walk through to the main event only to be halted by,

‘Good evening, Sir. May I see your membership card?’

Membership? For a casino? Surely that’s optional. Confused, J expertly questioned the front of house staff. Apparently no membership, no entry. Next minute J’s ID was out of his hand and his details were being furiously entered into a computer. Next minute I was being questioned about my identity and my ID card was out my hand and my details, including photo, we’re being entered into another computer. A third pompous front of house staff member came to provide support in the form of glaring to keep us in our place whilst our details were turned into membership cards. Our backpack was then confiscated and we were free to enter the casino main event, membership cards in hand.

Dressed in a classic tourist combo of jeans, all purpose travel coat and sturdy walking shoes, we were not amongst our people here. Side glances from other patrons ensued whilst we browsed the casino games on offer; a small collection of poker and black jack tables, an automated roulette wheel and a few ‘puggies’ (slot machines). At a minimum £1 bet the roulette wheel only accepted notes whilst the puggies had a minimum 50p bet. We clearly didn’t have enough money to be making any kind of bets. Or maybe we had enough sense to know we would be wasting our money. We opted for a quiet table in the corner to retreat to and observe the upper class in their native habitat. It didn’t take long for us to reclaim our backpack, leave the casino, membership cards bewilderedly in hand, and head for the bus station.

Things about and photos of Edinburgh

Here are some things about Edinburgh that I’ve noticed after two months of living here. A few photos of Edinburgh taken over the same months follow. Enjoy!

Things about Edinburgh:

  • Stairs/ hills are a thing. I climb an average 30 sets of stairs per day.
  • “To be fair” is a thing. It’s an opener of a sentence that precedes an opposing sentence from you or another party.
  • Vape is a thing. This is a battery-operated cigarette that seems to out do tobacco cigarettes 2-to-1.
  • Member based parks are a thing. We’ve spotted a few lush parks we’ve not been able to enter as the gates are physically padlocked closed and CCTV monitors entry/ exit to ensure members only use the park.
  • First in best-dressed real estate rental is a thing. If you’re the first tenant to submit your rental application form, you’ve got the property. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best/ worst applicant; you got that form in the fastest. Well done you!
  • “In’t it” is a thing. It’s a suffix used to encourage agreement from another party.
  • One guy in a group the night after a ‘big one’ wearing female clothing is a thing. It’s standard on Saturday and Sunday morning to see a group of lads all carrying overnight bags with one lad dressed in a bra/ tutu/ long wig/ dress etc. There’s no such thing as an original dare outcome.
  • Picnic/ smoke-o/ hanging-out in graveyards is a thing. Whilst we’ve been perusing old headstones we’ve noticed an unusually large number of people hanging-out in the graveyard as if it were any other social location.
  • Massive bees are a thing. We opened the flat window and in flew a bee as big as a ceiling down light.
  • Four seasons in a day is a thing. It’s so tough to dress for all weather occasions! The most extreme we’ve encountered was leaving for the Botanic Gardens in glorious sunshine and arriving 40-minutes later in rain that turned to sleet.
  • ‘Taking a picture’ is a thing. One does not take a photo of something they take a picture.
  • Closes are a thing. A narrow street leading off a main street, particularly in Old Town Edinburgh, is commonly called a Close, none of this Alley/ Lane business.
  • A washing machine in the kitchen is a thing. It’s just another whitegood plumbed into the kitchen wet area.
  • Seagulls not near water are a thing. There’s a seagull perched on the windowsill right now and I’m a 40-minute walk from the beach. I can also hear them intermittently larking/ trilling in a colony.
  • Fascinators as part of female formal wear are a thing. We’ve walked past a few weddings and the ladies in attendance all seem to wear fascinators, some to the extreme as if there’s a small planet in orbit of their head. There’s never a racehorse in sight.
  • Carpet in the bathroom is a thing. It is warm on your feet, but getting it wet is weird.
  • Anti-climb paint is a thing. I can’t work out if this is a jovial deterrent sign, or it’s actually a serious type of paint.
  • Dogs in pubs is a thing. It’s perfectly normal for your dog to accompany you into most pubs. We played a pub quiz night in the company of a handsome hound last weekend.
